C16 / C16a - Domestic Violence (Victim Treatment Focus)

13 Hours / 3 Hours

Goal:


To educate professionals working in the field of health care about the impact and treatment of victims of domestic violence. 

To address its impact on the individual, the family unit, the workplace, society and violence in general.

Objective:


Identify the components found in cycle of abuse.

Discuss 5 reasons why the victim stays in an abusive relationship.

Define types of abuse, trauma bonds, initial and long-term survival and recovery strategies.

Discuss 5 healthy family traits.

C16 is a 13 hour course, and C16a is a 3 hour shorter version of the same course.

C17 / C17a  - Domestic Violence (Perpetrator Treatment Focus)

11 Hours / 3 Hours
  • Newton Hightower LCSW-ACP, LCDC has designed this course to aid counselors in treating the perpetrator of domestic violence. Power and control are the issues with domestic violence, regardless of the types of abuse. Newton has created a Certification Course for counselors working with this population. He is located in Houston, Texas

Goal:


The goal of this course is to identify treatment strategies found helpful in dealing with this population.

Objective:


Explain 3 stages in recovery from this type of perpetration.

Discuss the intoxication power of cursing and its impact on people who rage.

Describe the value of having the violent client agree to repress the expression of anger.

C17 is an 11 hour course, and C11a is a 3 hour shorter version of the same course.

C18 - Introduction to Dual Diagnosis Issues

6 Hours

This course will address various psychiatric disorders that may coexist with alcoholism.

Goal:


The purpose of this course is to expand the counselors knowledge about the complexities involved with the treatment of mental illness coexisting with the disease of addiction.

Objective:


Describe 3 symptoms found in Anxiety Disorders.

Discuss the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for alcoholism.

Differentiate between drug induced psychoses and drug addiction behaviors.

C19  - Emotional Discovery Through Poetry / Literature Therapy

13 Hours

This course focuses on using the tenets of expressive therapy through the use of poetry, short stories, movie clips, stones, leaves, etc.  It is excellent for Alzheimer's patients, addicts, prison populations, survivors of trauma, children, teens, marriage encounter groups and the elderly.

Goal:


The purpose of this course is to explore and describe the types of poetry, etc. to be used.

To explore and describe various setting and patient populations benefiting from Poetry / Literature Therapy.

To understand the role of the therapist and effective use of homework assignments.

Objective:


Professionals will be taught the 4 steps in the process, and strategies for facilitating a session, the dynamics of a group in bibliotherapy and the personal traits of the Bibliotherapist.

C20 - Relapse Prevention

11 Hours

Goal:


The goal of this course is to offer strategies to counselors wanting to develop a successful long term recovery plan. The course offers a unique application of the CENAPS process originated by Terry Gorski. It also picks up where Gorski leaves off in helping a client let go of the disease and lifestyle.

Objective:


Discuss a step by step process for helping the addict identify and overcome relapse.

Implement an effective relapse prevention program.

Explain how by identifying negative core beliefs and family of origin incidents clients are better able to develop a realistic plan for recovery.
